Many people assume that having 20/20 eyesight means the visual system is working perfectly. Werner Nefdt’s practice is dedicated to the spaces where that assumption falls short. As a Neuro-Optometrist, he looks beyond the physical structure of the eye (the hardware) to evaluate and treat how the brain processes what it sees (the software).
Werner advocates for an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. He works collaboratively alongside paediatricians, educational psychologists, occupational therapists, ophthalmologists, educators, and sports coaches to ensure that the visual system fully supports a patient's broader developmental, academic, medical, and athletic goals.
In His Own Words: A Personal Journey Behind the Practice
"My commitment to functional vision care began with my own struggles. As a student, I found it incredibly difficult to focus and was eventually prescribed medication for ADHD. It was only later, when I underwent a developmental vision assessment, that I discovered my 'attention' issues were actually untreated visual tracking and teaming hurdles.
Undergoing vision therapy changed the trajectory of my life. It resolved my reading anxiety, allowed me to safely wean off medication, and unexpectedly unlocked a massive breakthrough in my competitive tennis game. Having lived the frustration of an invisible visual deficit—and the profound relief of correcting it—I have dedicated my career to helping patients who have been told their struggles 'aren't vision-related.'"
Credentials & Professional Standing
Werner graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2011 and has spent the last fifteen years continually advancing his clinical knowledge, including a decade-long educational collaboration with the New England College of Optometry (USA).
He is an active member of the South African Optometric Association (SAOA). Following years of rigorous peer review and examination, Werner achieved his board-certified Fellowship through the Optometric Vision Development & Rehabilitation Association (OVDRA) in the United States. He is currently one of only two clinicians in South Africa to hold this international designation.
Whether you are a parent looking for answers, an athlete chasing a competitive edge, or a healthcare and educational professional seeking a trusted, specialised referral partner in the Southern Suburbs, Werner provides care that is as clinically precise as it is empathetic.
